Two explorer.exe running windows 7

If you chose "open containing folder" it will open an windows explorer explorer. Once closed the "explorer. Also I suspected it to be a virus or malware, but computer has been scanned using Microsoft Security Essentials and it showed perfectly clean.

The same behavior is not seen when windows explorer is opened manually. No aditional explorer. This registry key should map to the "Launch folder windows in a separate process" setting, what that does is create a explorer. This should result in no more than two explorer.

Some people change Windows Explorer's default folder by appending a folder path to a taskbar button's "Target" property. While this does exactly what it's supposed to do it creates this new windows in their own process.

I'm not entirely convinced this is your problem because these processes tend to close shortly after the window is but if that's something you've done it could be contributing. I too have many explorer exes, after reading your question, I went to utorrent 1. And process explorer shows, two are the sub categories of winnt. While other explorer. Well, at least I am OK with multiple exes because I know I don't have any malware or virus lurking around or hidden in my computer!

I have two machines, one of which has uTorrent. Both are Home Premium bit. After running either machine for more than a day, there are always at least three or four explorer processes running, and if I forgot to check for a few days there can be up to 16 or so. By taking some small action in the actual shell I can identify the shell copy of Explorer.

I have of course checked the registry key mentioned above and it is set to 0. It is not related to uTorrent, as it is happening on the machine without uT installled. I use Firefox 3. I have looked in process explorer and can't find any relationship between my actions on the machine and these instances of explorer. Can anyone offer some more concrete information or troubleshooting? Each process is typically using MB of memory. I can't see any point in trying Safe Mode because half the programs won't run.

TIA for any information or suggestions on where to go from here. I've been having the same problem. In my case, I get an extra instance of explorer that prevents my flash drive from being "safely removed". Based on the hints in this thread, I tried starting explorer from the command line. In my experiment, the extra instance quit when the explorer window was closed. I run scripts that open explorer using the first command. I suspect that sometimes the extra instance does not shut down when the window is closed.

Dunno if this helps anyone Zone Alarm recognized it as virus but wouldnt remove it. Just kept respawning instantly. Had to boot into safe mode, remove entries from registry, then delete said folder.

Also removed all prefetch entries. I'm not sure if it's related or not I couldn't find out, but I have also used utorrent before. Tried the above fix and no improvement. Only thing I can do is reboot and not launch mp3 files from Explorer, which sux becuase it's too easy to forget that common task You might think the Parent Explorer Process would use the most memory, but that's not always the case. You can't just blindly kill all of the explorer tasks from the manager and hope you hit the right one.

You might as well reboot and do it safely the first time. In Windows 7 if you try to kill the Parent Explorer Process from an administrative command-line using Just click "cancel" to keep the Parent. It changes if you have to reboot. Now you should see how tricky it is to determine the Parent Explorer process.

After a lot of playing around I found a solution. Can anyone give me pointers where to start investigating? I did a clean install of Windows 7 last Friday -formatted HDD and all, so there hasn't been much time for anything bad to happen! I've never seen this in any previous version, and it doesn't look right to me.

I found out what is causing the explorer. If you give ANY arguments to explorer. For example, simply using "explorer. I had 15 explorer. See if this fixes it! Not having used Vista, and being new to Windows 7, is there something I am missing here? Is it normal for multiple instances of "Explorer. Jul 29, 30 0 0. May 1, 0 Check Double check and make sure both explorer. Phazor MDL Expert. Sep 1, 1, Could it be that you have this option enabled?

Phazor, yes that is part of it, but the problem is when we close a window the exe hangs around, I have seen about strays in taskmgr, even when I have no windows open. Well thats certainly a bug then When I checked the process paths I noticed that the location was identical and the standard explorer.

Still, it felt strange that two process were started instead of just one. It took a bit of investigating to find the reason for this behavior. When you look at both processes you will notice that they act independently of each other. You can see that for instance by looking at the memory usage or cpu utilization.

I'd like to point out that you need to make sure that the two explorer. It is a good idea to check the path first, if you see a different path for one process you may have a virus problem. You can check both explorer. A settings in the Folder Options configuration of Windows Explorer explains the existence of two explorer. Switch to the View tab there and scroll down until you find the following preference: Launch folder windows in a separate process.

If the preference is checked you have found the reason why two explorer. You can uncheck the option to have only one Windows Explorer process running at any time on the system.

The core reason for enabling the option is stability. It is usually safe to disable the feature so that only one explorer process is running on the PC. From what I can tell, two processes use more memory.

Cannot really say about cpu utilization as it is usually very low on my PC. I also periodically check the Task Manager and have never noticed two instances of Explorer running at the same time.
